The Return of River Fest
After a long seven-year hiatus, the beloved San Angelo River Fest returned on September 27, 2025, with everything that makes it a great family event. There were vendors selling everything from custom bows to metal signs, the Vega Washer Pitching Tournament, food trucks galore, kids’ flag football games, local musicians playing under the bridge, a three-on-three basketball tournament, horseback rides, the Clash on the Concho skate tournament and metal show, and of course—a petting zoo!

Flag Football Madness
When I arrived around 11 a.m., the flag football games were already in full swing. Parents lined the painted fields, cheering as their kids ran, dodged, and occasionally piled up (not quite the goal in flag football). There were even a few full-field runs ending in triumphant touchdowns—it was chaotic but so much fun to watch.

Horses, Bunnies, and a Rowdy Turkey?
Over by the Lady in Blue statue, families crowded around the animal area. Kids rode horses—some waving imaginary lassos like seasoned cowboys, others holding on for dear life once they realized how tall they were sitting.
Next door, the petting zoo was a hit, with animals ranging from donkeys to a feisty turkey (who ended up in timeout for pecking too many visitors). The rabbits stole the show, though—small, fluffy, and absolutely adored by the kids.

Washer Pitching Like You've Never Seen
Before River Fest, I didn’t realize just how intense washer pitching could be. Teams traveled from all over the country, setting up tents, coolers, and music while keeping razor-sharp focus during their turns. The atmosphere felt part tailgate, part serious tournament—it was impressive.

Basketball Battles at the Y
The YMCA pavilion hosted a lively three-on-three basketball tournament with players of all ages. Between games, a $20 half-court shot contest drew huge participation. It took several rounds, but eventually, one lucky shooter nailed the basket and took home the prize.

Mermaids on the Bridge
On Celebration Bridge, the Mermaid Pageant gave kids the chance to live out their Little Mermaid dreams. Dressed in sparkling costumes, they walked the catwalk to the cheers of family and friends. Winners were chosen by age group, but every participant received a prize.
As a girl dad, this event held a special place in my heart. I even printed a few photos on my Instax mini printer and handed them out to contestants later in the day—a little keepsake of their proud moment.

Food and Vendors Galore!
If all the activities weren’t enough, the vendor booths and food trucks offered plenty to explore. From custom tumblers and balloon animals to popcorn, BBQ, HTeaO, and even Chick-fil-A, there was no shortage of food, drinks, and unique finds.
Clash on the Concho - My Personal Highlight
My favorite part of the day was the Clash on the Concho skate competition. Skaters of different skill levels competed while local metal bands shredded riffs—just like the skate demo videos I grew up watching with my friends.
One of the most creative challenges involved a large ramp set up on a grassy median, balanced with weights to make it level with the concrete. Riders took turns trying to clear the gap—it was equal parts thrilling and dangerous. Many wiped out, a few came close to disaster, and a couple stuck the landing. But everyone got some serious air.
Closing Reflections
River Fest’s return was nothing short of spectacular—full of energy, community, and memories.
